An insect inside does not automatically mean an infestation. Cornell lists several fall visitors, including stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and cluster flies. Identification helps you decide whether exclusion or another response makes sense.

What to document

  • Notice whether sightings cluster around windows or one side of the house.
  • Record the approximate number and whether activity is increasing.
  • Photograph a specimen to help distinguish look-alike insects.

A sensible first step

Inspect accessible screens and door seals. Ask for identification before treating an unknown insect, especially when sightings are occasional.

  1. What insect is this, and why might it be entering?
  2. Which gaps or screens should be repaired?
  3. Is treatment necessary, or is prevention enough?
